It’s almost over, and now we wait…
November signals the end of harvest in the cider world and here at Sandford Orchards our press is slowing down, dealing with the last few apples to fall from the trees. In a a few days time our yard will be free from the sound of apple trailers and the press will become silent for another year.
So what happens next? We’ll keep you updated each month but for the time being all the juice pressed is being stored in our rows of large tanks, slowly fermenting….
A Cider for all Seasons
It’s true that most people turn to cider on a hot summer’s day, but did you realise that cider can be the perfect choice whatever the weather? At this time of year why not try some mulled cider, perfect for chilly nights and roaring fires. You can pick up our Pomona’s Cask Spice cider in 20l box from our website, or pop into the Cider Works to take home a smaller portion.
Or why not have a go at making your own Mulled Cider. Here’s what you’ll need:
1.5 litres of cloudy cider (our Devon Mist and Devon Scrumpy are the perfect choices)
400ml of apple juice
A clove studded apple
A couple of star anise
Zest of 1 orange
Tablespoon of allspice berries
A cinnamon stick
Add a good slug of Calvados or brandy if you want to give it an extra kick.
Combine all the ingredients in a saucepan and gently simmer for 30 minutes – do not boil. Then ladle into glass mugs, garnish with apple slices and enjoy!
You can buy a range of great cider gifts both on our website and in our Tap Room Shop here at the Cider Works. Our shop is open Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm (Fridays late night opening until 10pm) and Saturdays from 10am – 2pm. You can always stay for a drink while you browse..
