Cider Done Right, The Film.

We talk about Cider Done Right a lot but it’s hard to explain what that really means in just a few words. That’s why we decided to make a film! So if you want to find out more about what makes our cider so special then, sit back, relax and enjoy!

Finding Lost Apples

A couple of years ago we did some small scale research with a team of scientists from Bristol University, using DNA fingerprinting to start mapping our apple trees. The results were fascinating! We discovered that our orchards contained a far greater variety of apple trees than we had imagined and a number of those were unique!

Science with a hole punch

We were keen to take this further and to do this, we recently tendered for and won a competitive bid to receive a grant from DEFRA to expand this research. Apples are at the heart of everything we do so we are very keen to pinpoint the best cider apple trees around and make sure that we have plenty of those producing fruit for generations of cider-lovers to come. That means identifying varieties that we hope will continue to bear superb cider apples, even in the face of our evolving climate.

We are hoping that this information will also lead to some exciting new small-batch ciders, created from single varieties that we have discovered. If these are a big hit, they could become the ciders of the future as we will then be in a great position to start propagating and preserving these trees. We will keep you posted on progress and any new single -apple ciders made from newly discovered apple varieties!

Cider Spotlight Devon Red

As our best-selling and most well-known cider, you are probably already familiar with Devon Red but here are some things that you might not know about this utterly delicious, crisp and fruity cider.

Devon Red Cider

Devon Red takes its name from the rich red soil that gives our orchards their distinctive quality. The key apple varieties that are pressed to create Devon Red include Farmers Glory, Dabinett and Sweet Alford. In 2023, Devon Red was voted ‘Best Drink Product in the South West’ by the readers of Food Magazine.

Spring At Sandford Orchards

As cider makers, we always look forward to spring. Not only do the apple trees start to blossom, with all the promise of a bountiful harvest to come, but the apples that we pressed from the last harvest are now reaching maturity and are ready to blend into the next batch of cider. We are also hoping to see the sunshine at last too and enjoy some perfect cider drinking weather, maybe even a barbecue with a Devon Red in hand!
