Summer cider cocktails: Top 5 cider cocktail recipes

Top 5 cider cocktail recipes

The sun has finally seemed to make an appearance over the past few weeks, and it really is beginning to feel like summer is just around the corner. For us, summer is a season particularly synonymous with barbeques, picnics, and beach excursions, accompanied of course by plenty of cider to quench our thirst. For certain summer occasions however, we like to push the boat out a little further and elevate our drink of choice to include cider cocktails. When you think of summer cocktails, you’d be forgiven if cider cocktails were not the first thing that springs to mind, however we’ve got a whole host of delicious recipes for you to try out and add to your cocktail repertoire this summer:

Bourbon apple cider cocktail:

The first cocktail mixes bourbon, lemon juice, fresh ginger and of course cider to create a smooth cocktail with a slight spicy kick at the end. We would recommend using the Sandford Orchards Devon Mist in this cocktail, a medium-sweet cider to add a fruity depth to the flavour.

  • 1 piece of fresh ginger, peeled
  • 2 shots Devon Mist
  • 1 shot good bourbon
  • squeeze of lemon juice
  • cinnamon/sugar for rimming glass
  • Optional: apple slice and cinnamon stick for garnish

Peel piece of ginger and rub rim of a rocks glass with the ginger. Dip glass rim in a cinnamon/sugar mixture and set aside.
Put ginger in cocktail glass with some ice. Muddle to release ginger flavour.
Add Devon Mist, bourbon and lemon juice.
Shake well and pour over ice in rocks glass.
Garnish with apple slice and cinnamon stick, if desired

Apple Cider Mimosas

For a delicious twist on the classic mimosa cocktail, why not add some cider instead of orange juice or liqueur to your prosecco for the perfect pre-dinner tipple. We would recommend adding the crisp fruity flavours of Devon Red to this cocktail.

  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • 240 ml Devon Red
  • 1 bottle of prosecco

On a small plate, combine sugar and cinnamon. Dip champagne flutes in water to wet the rims, then dip in cinnamon sugar mixture.
Fill champagne flutes 1/4 full with Devon Red, then top off with prosecco.

Apple Cider Gin Cocktail

A fresh, sharp gin and rose cider cocktail which is perfect for those light balmy evenings. The Katja Rosé cider is a sure winner in this one, with floral notes of apple blossom to compliment the juniper in the gin.

  • 60 ml Gin
  • 15 ml Lemon juice
  • 15 ml . sugar syrup
  • Katja Rosé Cider

Add your gin, lemon juice, and sugar syrup to the shaker with ice.
Stir it all up, and strain into your glass that over fresh ice.
Top with your Katja Rosé cider and garnish with apple, lemon, or your herb or spice of choice.

Apple Cider Sangria

Apple Cider Sangria

Nothing says summer like a pitcher of Sangria! The cider makes a flavourful additional to traditional sangria and elevates that fruity flavour. One of our Traditional Ciders works well with this, such as The General or our Sandford Reserve.

Ingredients for a jug:

  • 2 small pears, thinly sliced
  • 2 small apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium lemon, cut into wedges
  • 64g pomegranate seeds
  • 475ml of The General or Sandford Reserve
  • 120ml whiskey
  • 60ml brandy
  • 355ml  sparkling white wine or Prosecco

To a large pitcher, add pear, apple, lemon and pomegranate seeds.
Pour your choice of The General or Sandford Reserve into the pitcher, followed by whiskey and brandy.  Refrigerate for a few hours, and then add the sparkling wine right before serving).
Pour chilled sangria into glasses, making sure to get plenty of fruit in each glass.  Garnish each glass with a cinnamon stick and a star anise.
